Mother of NSU suspect Zschäpe refuses to testify in neo-Nazi killings case (Germany)

The mother of Beate Zschäpe, the woman on trial in Germany over her alleged role in a string of neo-Nazi murders, has refused to testify. Annerose Zschäpe claimed a legal right not to testify against a close relative.

Annerose Zschäpe (pictured right), who appeared with her lawyer at the Munich Higher Regional Court on Wednesday, said she was using her right under German law to refuse to give testimony against a close relative.

In her brief, three minute appearance, the 61-year-old also directed that her statements made to officers in the November 2011 investigation of the case should not be used in court.

Beate Zschäpe is alleged to be the only surviving member of a trio known as the National Socialist Underground, which prosecutors claim embarked on an "execution-style" killing spree between 2000 and 2009.

The three, Zschäpe and the now-deceased Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt, were allegedly behind the murder of nine immigrants of Turkish and Greek background, as well as a German policewoman.

Prosecutors have portrayed 38-year-old Zschäpe as having been a troubled youth growing up in eastern Germany as communism came to an end - with the mass unemployment, youth crime and spread of neo-Nazi ideology that followed.

Parental failure has been an important issue in the trial, with Böhnhardt's mother giving evidence earlier in the month.

'Right, but not so extreme'

Mother and daughter, who are reported to have had a difficult relationship, were said not to have looked at each other in the courtroom.

Despite the refusal of Zschäpe's mother to testify, her cousin - identified only as Stefan A. - did speak in court on Wednesday about the childhood of the accused.

He described the defendant, with whom he grew up in the eastern German city of Jena, as "nice," but added that she was "not a girl to simply accept things." Zschäpe had right-wing leanings, he said, but these were "not so extreme" and commonplace among young people in the low-income city.

"We already had a bias towards the right then," said the 39-year-old. "We hated the state, foreigners, the left - just about everything," he said, but added that he had not directly discussed politics with Zschäpe.

Stefan A. added that he had lost contact with Zschäpe and the two men. "Uwe Mundlos disapproved of my lifestyle. I drank a lot and partied," he said, adding Mundlos had become a teetotaler.

German police and intelligence agencies have been criticized for their failure to detect a far-right motive for the killings, and for not following up a trail of clues that would have led to the group being caught.

Zschäpe is alleged to have set fire to an apartment she shared with Mundlos and Böhnhardt in the city of Zwickau, after the two died in an apparent suicide pact in November, 2011.

Finland Needs Tougher Hate Crime Laws

On Tuesday a Justice Ministry panel called for tougher, more specific laws against hate crimes, while anti-racism activists held a demonstration in Helsinki. In a report handed over to Justice Minister Tuija Brax on Tuesday, the working group recommends adding a new criminal charge be added to the law books, which translates roughly as aggravated incitement against a societal group. It also says the current laws on hate crimes be expanded to cover acts based on victims' sexual orientation or handicaps, and to make it possible to punish groups or associations found guilty of hate crimes. The panel wants more rules against online racism, for instance making it a crime to publish a link to a racist website.

DUTCH FILMMAKER IN COURT OVER ANTI-ISLAM HATE SPEECH

Dutch far-right lawmaker Geert Wilders on Wednesday appeared in an Amsterdam court for the first time in connection with charges of inciting racial hatred against Muslims. Wilders, who has compared the Koran to Hitler's Mein Kampf, "has always made his statements in his capacity as a public representative," his lawyer Bram Moszkowicz argued at the start of the hearing, held amid heavy security.
The 46-year-old MP, creator of the controversial anti-Islam film Fitna, was greeted outside the Amsterdam district court by about 200 supporters, some of whom came from Belgium and Germany to attend the proceedings. Wednesday's hearing was to work out the modalities for Wilders' trial, for which no date has been set and which he claims is a "political process." Moszkowicz argued that this court had no jurisdiction to hear the case, arguing the Supreme Court was the competent authority for allegations involving misconduct by an MP. But prosecutor Birgit van Roessel said that "expressing his opinion in the media or through other channels is not part of an MP's duties." Lawmakers only enjoy immunity for their utterances when these are made in the confines of parliament.
Wilders faces five charges of religious insult and anti-Muslim incitement after a court last week dismissed his final challenge against the pending prosecution. He stands accused of insulting Muslims by describing Islam as a fascist religion and calling for the banning of the Koran. He is also charged with inciting hatred and discrimination for stating that Moroccan youths were violent, calling for Dutch borders to be closed to all "non-western immigrants", and advocating an end to what he terms "the Islamic invasion." Wilders faces up to two years in jail if convicted.

Hate Crimes Rise Follows BNP Victories

Documented cases of hate crime increased in wards in the West Midlands, London and Essex after the election of a BNP member to the local councils, despite the fall of crimes in wider police areas. These findings come as the BNP begin their 2010 general election campaign in earnest in Barking and Dagenham where party Fhurer Nick Griffin will be running.
Should we be surprised?

Well not really, what we should be more suprised about is that there are figures to demonstrate this. In 2009 the UK government released a report stating that most hate crimes are never reported, so the figures will actually be a lot higher than the Guardian newspaper story covered. Although the UK’s government recognise this fact it is having very little impact in changing it.

Only in 2009 did the USA seriously begin to recognise that hate crime incidents motivated by race, relegion, sexual orientaion were different to other crimes. And have finally establised laws to deal with the incidents, which is quite alarming when in 2009 the Sothern Poverty Law Centre (a very large civil rights organisation) stated there were 926 active ‘hate groups’ in the USA and the FBI figures for 2008 showed 9,691 incidents; that’s not all incidents in the USA, just ones serious enough to be investigated by the FBI. Up until now the hate element of the crime was not recorded by the avarage police department, so there are no reliable figures.
Now in a country where free speech allows hate speech should we be surprised that hate flourishes? Probably not. And we should not be surprised either that the BNP also campaign for the removal of laws that prevent hate speech.

The figures support the simple fact that where the BNP take hold, hate rises. And if we ever give them a free hand to remove the restrictions to prevent them using hate speech we should be ready for a hell of a lot more.

Hate Groups Using Social Networking Sites to Recruit and Inform

Yesterday on the anti-BNP Hope Not Hate website an item about the apparent cracks that are appearing in the anti-Islamic Group the English Defence League was published. We found this article an interesting read but it only briefly mentions the fact that the EDL use social networking sites as a way to gain support and spread hate propaganda.

Yet again another hate group comes to light that have found a valuable tool in the allowance of social networks to refuse to take a moralistic stance and do something to help combat race/religious/sexuality hate promotion on their sites. Until they decide that although free speech should not be silenced, hate speech is a different language and should be prevented.

The full EDL story can be found here.

From a Child to Hate Preacher in 6 months with BNP grooming.

In 2009 a You Tube user by the name of Safcman appeared on the video sharing website. His first video blog post, although being critical of the ethnic minorities, was not really hateful but just views put across through misunderstanding and mixed with typical British National Party immigrant/anti-Islam, well publicised propaganda lies.

However 6-7 months on, this now teenager actively advocates the murder of Muslims and spreads racist hate through his videos and comments. Recently he posted a video that has been banned across many internet sites which, in a cartoon format, depicted a Jew stabbing a Muslim and then shouting “Anti-Semitic hate" when he was to be arrested and he now also posts extreme racial comments like the one pictured.

So how did this happen, and why?
The simple truth is the corruption of this person is not an accident.
Any user who posts a video on the You Tube web site that relates in anyway to the BNP or their views faces extreme abuse or racist grooming depending on which side of the agenda they are on.

Firstly: the people who post anti-BNP videos.

As stated anyone who posts a video that challenges or criticises the BNP or their policies runs the gauntlet of extreme abuse, stalking, false video flagging and even violent threats. Very seldom is it from just one person but more like a horde and it’s often the same people doing it.

The new video poster more than often removes the video or his comments. Although the user can and does block and report the more extreme cases, the person causing the abuse often just creates a new You Tube user profile and then just carries on with his hateful campaign.

But what if you post a video expressing concern about immigration or Islamic ideology?

The BNP supporters swarm to the video with comments of support and admiration, often their comments will create falsehoods that directly affect the user and his video. Things like “don’t expect your video to get a lot of views because the anti-bnp’ers on here make sure people don’t watch it” etc. obviously these are simple lies. More often than not the video is not well done or informative; in other words it’s simply boring.

Why does one kitten video do better than another kitten video? Who knows, but as far as we are aware there are no anti-kitten video groups on you tube controlling viewing so no cute kitten video mafia.
But through posting comments like that the BNP supporters immediately create an “them against us” and a “they want to stop all free speech” view on the site to their new prey.

Friend invites, messages, subscriptions soon follow. The new user will often post another video but now it has a little bit more extreme view, not to the level of hate speech but regular users of the site can often see the step up in racist attitude and leanings towards the BNP. And as more and more videos are uploaded their hate and leanings grow. Often they will accuse everyone who does not agree with them as being fascist, Nazi, race traitor etc. Accusations of being members of the UAF are common and the old Goering ideology of “if you’re not for us you are against us (Britain)” is claimed again and again.

So what can we do?
Active groups and users that oppose racial hate preachers need to be formed, support must be offered to people who are victims of the BNP “New User” attack, truth instead of race hate lies needs to be the standard, and facts supplied rather than name calling offered as a defence. Basically people need to do what the BNP are actively doing.
Unlike any other political party’s members the BNP are directly creating followers to their platform through this simple procedure. Not only are they creating followers they are creating the hate preachers of tomorrow. And unless people do something there will be many more Safcman’s in the years to come.

Facebook Argue Holocaust Denial Not Anti-Semitic Hate Speech

In 2009 an interesting article appeared on the UK’s BBC web site that has largely been over looked.

It relates to the internet and does Facebook have the right to decide that a holocaust denial group is not hate speech yet a KKK group is. As holocaust denial in its essence expresses a denial of events rather than a impartial examination isn’t it in fact Anti-Semitic and obviously a tool
for the promotion of hate speech.

The full article be found here.
